Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu: 2 Days

This trip is an excellent choice for those wishing to experience the beauty and wonder of Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail, but have less time or physical ability to do a longer hike. The higlight of the first day is the archaeological complex of Wiñay Wayna (Quechua for 'forever young', hispanicized as Huiñay Huayna). It is built into a steep hillside above the Urubamba River. The complex includes houses, staircases, fountains and the agricultural terraces so representative of Inca ingenuity. From there we follow the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

We take the early morning train from Cusco through the picturesque Sacred Valley to a point known as Km 104, for its distance from Cusco. Here we enter the trail.

Our hike continues gently upward for approximately 4 hours until we reach the beautifully situated Inca complex of Wiñay Wayna. We'll pause for packed lunch along the way.

Sub-tropical flora and fauna surround us as we continue 2 hours to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), from where we get the first glimpse of Machu Picchu, still an hour's walk away.

We walk down past the majestic ruins, and then take the 20-minute bus ride to the friendly tourist town of Aguas Calientes to spend a relaxing night in a hotel.

Day 2: Machu Picchu - Cusco

After an early morning rise and breakfast, we take the short bus ride back up to the Machu Picchu complex, for a tour of the amazing architecture and mysterious temples left by the Incas. A professional, English-speaking guide will help us understand the sophisticated ideas and technology of this highly-advanced culture.

Once the official tour portion is completed, you will have plenty of time to explore the sanctuary on your own before returning to Aguas Calientes to catch an afternoon train back to Cusco.
