Machu Picchu: 1 Day

It will be a full day so expect to rise early! After breakfast at your hotel in Cusco we’ll pick you up travel on a comfortable bus to the Ollantaytambo station, about 1 hour and 40 minutes away. Here, we’ll catch the train to Aguas Calientes (also called Machu Picchu Pueblo). No roads go there. Along the approximately 2-hour route you’ll be able to observe the spectacular landscape of the Sacred Valley of the Incas and surrounding Andean peaks. Upon our arrival to the tiny bustling tourist town of Aguas Calientes we’ll take a final 20 minute bus ascending to the Machu Picchu Archeological Complex.

LlamasContact us for pricingWhen you first gaze upon the ruins of this legendary Lost City of the Incas, nestled in high Andean jungle, you will understand why the site has capitvated the world's imagination since it was rediscovered over a century ago by Americam academic and explorer Hiram Bingham III. The guided portion of our visit will last about 2 hours, during which you'll learn about the history and significance of the site’s most important areas, including the Intihuatana (Quechua for 'hitching post of the sun') at the Sun Temple, which famously aligns with the sun on the summer solstice and appears to hold it in place.

After learning about Inca culture and history, and admiring their architectural and hydraulic prowess, we’ll return to Aguas Calientes, where you will have time for lunch, shopping or an optional visit to the local thermal baths. After free time in Aguas Calientes we will catch the train back to Ollantaytambo station. There our bus will return us to Cusco.
